El Celler De Can Roca, Girona, Spain. World’s best restaurant.

El Celler De Can Roca, Girona, Spain. An experience worth a lifetime.

This is an institution of culinary excellence that was created in 1986 and is the gastronomic home of the 3 Roca brothers, Joan, Josep and Jordi.
It is exceptionally kind of Señor Jordi and Señor Josep for the conversation we shared over the food. Your humility even after you have conquered the world with your skills and talents is a reminder for all of us that being humble and kind is not just an act, it is a way of life lived in true greatness.

Reservations: Opens a year in advance for each month at a time. Slots for an entire month fills up in approximately 2-3 minutes. Yes, it is hard to find a seat in this restaurant but not impossible.

Getting there: Girona is 40 mins by train from Barcelona or about 4 hours from Madrid by train. Girona is a quaint historic town where scenes from Game of Thrones were shot.

Staying there: Girona has lot of gorgeous historic hotels about 300 years old. Reach out for top recommendations and to arrange for an exceptionally knowledgeable local guide who happens to be a professor of tourism.

Experience: A gourmand should always go for the Feast menu for the full experience priced at € 295, matching wine selected by Josep Roca for an additional € 150. The Feast menu comes to about 32 courses in total but trust me, the portion sizes are so beautifully made that we never felt full and wanted to have more. The skills of the chefs in the kitchen are at such peak levels that they were able to accommodate a vegetarian option along with the regular menu within a very short time.

One must observe how beautifully the entire service that takes about 3 hours is paced. One does not feel rushed and ample time is given to savour, understand and cherish what was just consumed.
The service staff is exceptionally knowledgeable and they truly enjoy working there. As they said “It is always a new, exciting and fun filled day working here”.  They look sharp in their custom-tailored outfits which are very sharp.

We were lucky to enter the immaculate kitchen and do a full tour to get an idea of how the engine room functions where the world’s best meals are prepared.

Overall: Visiting this abode of gastronomy is a lifetime experience that one waits and wishes to come back to every year of their life. We love Spain. We love Girona. We will be back soon.
